The first 48 hours after a Charlotte storm
Get everyone clear
Stay out of rooms under a sagging ceiling or a tree strike, and treat every downed line as live. Call the utility before anyone goes near one.
Photograph before anything moves
Roof, attic, ceilings, siding, gutters and the yard — with a coin or ruler next to the hail. Pictures taken before cleanup are the backbone of a claim.
Stop the water
The NC Department of Insurance tells homeowners to “make temporary repairs so further damage doesn’t occur and keep your receipts” — and to hold off on permanent repairs until the insurer has inspected. An emergency tarp is exactly that kind of repair.
Report it promptly
NCDOI notes that every homeowners policy in North Carolina requires prompt notice to your agent or company — and that the insurer should acknowledge the claim within 30 days.
Don’t sign at the door

North Carolina gives you extra protection against high-pressure storm sales: a residential roof contract sold away from the seller’s place of business carries a five-business-day cancellation window after an insurance claim denial, and the seller can’t start work or take payment during it. (Licensed general contractors are outside that rule, and emergency work you approve in writing can be billed.)
What “total loss” looks like on a roof
Insurers pay for what the storm damaged, not for a roof you wanted anyway. NCDOI’s homeowner FAQ says the company has to “replace the damaged area; even if the shingles will not match.” A full replacement happens when the damage is everywhere:
- Hail hits on every slope, not just the side that faced the storm — bruised or cracked shingles, exposed mat, granules piled in the gutters.
- Wind that creased or tore tabs across large areas, or peeled whole sections back to the decking.
- A tree strike that broke decking or rafters, where the repair has to go down to the structure.
- Damage that leaves too little matching roof to repair against.
Your deductible after a named storm
A hurricane, tropical storm or tropical depression can trigger a separate named-storm deductible, and it is often a percentage of your dwelling coverage. NCDOI’s example: a 2% named-storm deductible on a home insured for $300,000 is $6,000. Know yours before storm season, not after.
