Florence made landfall near Wrightsville Beach in September 2018 (National Hurricane Center), and NCEI’s New Hanover County record logged 105 mph winds measured at Wilmington International Airport, large trees down throughout Wilmington and a tree through the roof of a home. Seven of the county’s tornado reports from 2016 through 2025 came on September 15 and 16, 2018, while Florence moved slowly inland.

What “total loss” looks like on a roof
Insurers pay for what the storm damaged, not for a roof you wanted anyway. NCDOI’s homeowner FAQ says the company has to “replace the damaged area; even if the shingles will not match.” A full replacement happens when the damage is everywhere:
- Hail hits on every slope, not just the side that faced the storm — bruised or cracked shingles, exposed mat, granules piled in the gutters.
- Wind that creased or tore tabs across large areas, or peeled whole sections back to the decking.
- A tree strike that broke decking or rafters, where the repair has to go down to the structure.
- Damage that leaves too little matching roof to repair against.
Your deductible after a named storm
A hurricane, tropical storm or tropical depression can trigger a separate named-storm deductible, and it is often a percentage of your dwelling coverage. NCDOI’s example: a 2% named-storm deductible on a home insured for $300,000 is $6,000. Know yours before storm season, not after.
